Cos’è veramente ICON? È questa la domanda che ci stiamo facendo ormai da tempo e che sempre di più emerge durante gli incontri collettivi. Non siamo colleghi, e non siamo nemmeno soltanto amici. È un po’ come una famiglia allargata che riunisce persone da mezza Italia e non solo (l’associata più a nord, Anna, è stabile a Londra da tempo, mentre quello più a sud vive ad Ascoli-Piceno). Una famiglia, si diceva, che respira la fotografia non come mezzo espressivo, bensì come il proprio rapporto personale, ognuno a suo modo, con quella storia che ci ha presi tutti e non ci lascia più. Un attaccamento al movimento, a Don Giussani e a Cristo che ormai è parte integrante della nostra vita.

E come in tutte le famiglie ci sono le decisioni da prendere, i problemi, la quotidianità che si impone, ma che non toglie quella libertà di potersi guardare come il primo giorno, per crescere insieme. Ed è in questa bellezza, in questa libertà che vive la verità. «Il mondo ha bisogno di verità, anche se spesso preferisce la menzogna» ci ricorda Jonah a fine giornata, perché la Chiesa, il mondo ha bisogno di cristiani liberi e seri che vivano la propria professionalità con libertà, desiderosi della libertà dell’altro. Come ricordava il Prof. Franco Nembrini qualche tempo fa, questo significa voler bene ad un altro: «Ti voglio bene, significa io voglio il tuo bene! Ma se non so nemmeno cosa sia il mio di bene, come posso sapere quale sia il tuo?». Ecco che allora torna prepotentemente quella domanda degli scorsi esercizi: “per sapere chi sono, devo prima sapere «di Chi» sono”, a chi appartengo, qual è la mia famiglia?

È una sfida quella lanciata da Jonah all’ultimo incontro di ICON, perché le opere richiedono tanto lavoro e fatica, ma sono una grande occasione di conversione per noi e per il mondo. ICON è pronta ad accoglierla.

What is ICON really? This is the questions that lately we are asking ourselves, that is emerging more and more during our collective meetings. We are not colleagues, still we are not just merely friends. ICON is more like an extended family that includes people from all over Italy, from Ascoli-Piceno to Lecco, with a UK addition, Anna lives and works in London. Indeed a family, whose members breath a live photography, not simply as an expressive means, rather as that personal journey and relationship with a history and a personal encounter that is going to stay with us forever. It’s a faithful adhesion for life to Communion and Liberation, catholic movement, to Father Giussani and ultimately to Christ.

As in every family, there are decision to be made, challenges and everyday life that gets in the way, but that does not take away the possibility and the chance to look at each other like the first day, to grow together. It is in this beauty, in this freedom that truth lies. «The world desires the truth, still it prefers lying» reminds us all Father Jonah at the end of our meeting. He says that the Church needs christians that are free and serious, that live the work as an opportunity and that desires the same for colleagues and friends. Professor Franco Nembrini said that is the ultimate meaning of “ti voglio bene” – which in English we can translate with “I love you, I care for you, I look after you, I desire your happiness” – but if i don’t know what my happiness is, how can we think to know what is the happiness of the other? And here a recurrent questions comes back: to understand who I am, we first need to realise where and who we belong.

Father Jonah challenged us on this belonging point during our last collective meeting and invited us to discover that this is a work that will take time and effort, but it’s, at the same time, a precious occasion for conversion for us and the entire world. ICON is ready to welcome it.
